Sketch to Floor Plan AI: convert your hand sketch into a clean 2D plan

Upload a photo of a hand-drawn floor plan, a scan or an old blueprint. Get back a professional, CAD-style drawing with straight walls, door swings, room labels and your dimensions — the same layout, just clean. Download it as an image, or trace it to DXF (beta) as an underlay for CAD.

The result is a clean drawing, not a measured CAD plan. Need a plan with real room sizes for AutoCAD? Plan Chat drafts it and exports PDF and DXF, on the same account.

Paid plans from $19/month for 50 generations ($190/year billed annually) + VAT where applicable (EU). One floor plan = one generation. No free tier.

Can AI create floor plans from sketches?

Yes. Photograph your hand-drawn floor plan, upload it to the tool above and the AI redraws it as a clean 2D floor plan in about 30 seconds. It straightens the walls, draws proper door swings and window openings, and copies your room names and the dimensions you wrote, keeping the layout as you drew it. You download the result as PNG or JPG, or trace it into DXF lines for CAD.

What it cannot do is measure. If your sketch says the kitchen is 12 ft wide, the drawing says 12 ft; if the sketch is out of proportion, so is the drawing, a little straighter. When you need a plan with exact room sizes that adds up, describe it in Plan Chat: it builds the plan as measured geometry and exports PDF and a layered DXF.

A real example

Left: a sample pencil sketch on a desk (we generated it for this demo, so no customer drawing is shown). Right: the output of the tool above with the pre-filled prompt — one generation, not retouched. Walls, room sizes and dimensions are carried over from the sketch.

After: clean 2D floor plan, same layout and dimensions

What people use it for

These are the jobs our paying customers actually bring, in their words:

  • “Redraw the attached photo/scan of a floor plan as a clean, professional drawing” — old plans from a landlord, seller or archive.
  • “Convert this hand-drawn floor plan sketch into a clean 2D floor plan” — a homeowner's or builder's own sketch, often with measurements written on it.
  • “Make this look like a real 2-bedroom floor plan” — for a listing, a rental application or a contractor quote.
  • “Don't change anything, just professionalize my sketch” — shop fit-outs, restaurant service areas, small offices.
  • “Put it into DXF” — as an underlay to keep drawing in AutoCAD or another CAD program.

Tips for a clean result

  • Photograph from straight above; avoid strong shadows and cut-off edges.
  • Write room names and the main dimensions on the sketch — the AI copies what it can read.
  • One floor per image. For two storeys, run the ground floor and upper floor separately.
  • To change the design rather than redraw it, say so explicitly, e.g. “remove the wall between kitchen and dining, keep everything else”.

FAQ

Is there an AI that can turn a hand sketch of a floor plan into a DXF file for AutoCAD?

Yes. Upload the sketch here: the AI redraws it as a clean 2D plan in about 30 seconds and the DXF (beta) button traces it into vector lines you can import into AutoCAD as an underlay. For a measured, layered DXF (walls, doors, windows and dimensions on separate layers, true size), attach the same sketch in Plan Chat on the same account; it keeps your layout and reports how far any room had to move.

Can AI create floor plans from sketches?

Yes. Upload a photo or scan of a hand-drawn floor plan here and the AI redraws it as a clean, labeled 2D floor plan with straight walls, door swings, room names and your written dimensions, in about 30 seconds. It keeps your layout. The result is an image with a DXF (beta) trace for CAD; for a measured plan with a layered DXF, use Plan Chat on the same account. Each redraw is one generation: plans start at $19/month for 50 generations.

Will the AI keep my layout, or redesign it?

Tell it to keep the layout and it does: the prompt above says to preserve the exact walls, rooms and proportions, and the example on this page was produced with it. Always compare the result with your sketch — AI can still misread a faint line or a smudged number, and you can correct it with a follow-up prompt such as “the wall between Bed 2 and the bath is 2.8 m, keep everything else”.

What can I upload?

A phone photo of a sketch on paper, a scan or PDF screenshot of an old plan, a grid-paper drawing or a marked-up print. JPG, PNG or WebP. Shoot from straight above, in good light, with the whole plan in frame. Written dimensions and room names help the redraw.

Can I get a DXF for AutoCAD?

Yes. Each result in the tool has a DXF (beta) button that auto-traces the clean drawing into vector linework you can import into AutoCAD, Revit, SketchUp or any CAD program as an underlay. It is a traced drawing, not a measured or layered CAD plan: check scale against one known dimension after import. For a measured plan with room sizes and a proper DXF, use Plan Chat (plans.ai-architectures.com) on the same account.

Is the output accurate enough for a permit?

No. Treat it as a clean presentation or working drawing for discussions with your builder, landlord, client or architect. Permit and construction drawings need a measured survey and a licensed professional.

What does it cost?

Each redraw is one generation. Plans start at $19/month for 50 generations, with no free tier, and you can cancel anytime — see pricing.

No sketch yet? Describe the house in words with the AI floor plan generator. Already have a clean plan image and only need vector lines? Use the free image to DXF tracer. See pricing.

How to convert a sketch to a floor plan that a builder can read

A contractor, landlord or planning officer reads a plan for three things: which rooms there are, how big they are and how you get from one to the next. A pencil sketch usually has all three, but wobbly lines, crossed-out walls and handwriting make it hard to read and easy to dismiss. The redraw keeps the information and removes the noise: one line weight for walls, standard door and window symbols, typed room names, and dimensions in a consistent style.

Sketch on grid paper if you can; one square per foot or per half metre makes proportions much better. Draw outer walls first, then inner walls, then doors with a small arc for the swing. Write each room name inside the room and the two main dimensions along the walls. If a part is uncertain, leave it out and add it later with a prompt rather than drawing a guess the AI will copy.

Want measured plans like these from your sketch?

These were drafted by our AI in Plan Chat from a one-line brief, with measured rooms, PDF and DXF. Read the room sizes off your sketch, write them as a brief there and you get this kind of plan, which you can then change by chat.
